27 Years Ago Today, I Escaped

It was my own personal independence day born from the night I chose freedom.

Italian fashion designer said it best when she said:

"The most beautiful things in life are simple and were given to us by God: the beauty of nature, happiness, light... and you know that you’re on the right path when your heart feels well.”

Happy Independence Day 🇺🇸 💥

Apple Cider Vinegar

Has anyone seen this series about Belle Gibson on Netflix? It's one of those things that you just can't believe happened. I could not help but think how it's a familiar playbook of the takers in this world who exploit others for their own gain. It was a good reminder to look for the big red flag and flashing lights when something has "guru" written all over it.

A Simple Grounding Exercise

I loved this... would welcome any thoughts. 🙂

If you ever feel a sudden pull - guilt, fear, anxiety, obligation, or the urge to explain yourself (we all do) this might be a good exploration to try.

If you are so inclined, name 5 things you can see, 4 you can feel, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, and 1 you can taste. Then ask yourself: “What is true right now, in this moment?” If you’d like, reply with what you noticed after doing it. We can build a small toolkit together that helps bring us back to ourselves.

This reminds me of one of the exercises I would do early on in my healing journey to help me learn to be in my body in the present moment. I would find a challenging post to balance on and do a yoga pose. The intense concentration and body awareness it would require forced me to quiet the noise in my mind. As I practiced it more I was able to shift to five senses awareness, which I could take with me anywhere.

What I experienced after those exercises was a feeling of calm and safety. If there was an important decision I needed to make, or simply didn't know what I needed in the moment, then it would help me tap into my inner voice.

The first time I did the balancing practice I also got to share my apple with a chipmunk and a bald eagle flew in front of me so I felt like the whole experience was telling me YES, DO THIS MORE.

This Just In...

This is commentary on the documentary which highlights one of the more salient points that, in my opinion, should have been more developed due to it's central relationship to life and it also being at the root of all healing.

In addition to Fabio extending such incredible heartfelt friendship, my brother and my fiancé also touched me in a way that no amount of mind control could surmount.

There could have been an entire movie about love and its power. 🤔

Meanwhile, here is more from my brother, Rory. I think you'll see what I mean. 💙

Agreed. In all the madness, there really is a beautiful throughline in my story. I have been saying for years that healing comes from where you put your attention. I wished the doc had leaned more into telling more survivor, triumph and redemption with less villian, carnage and pain. Perspective has the power to shape everything. But that's the entertainment industry for you. 🤨

Writing to Reckon

I found writing to be a very powerful tool in sorting through what had happened to me and it continues to play a big role in my healing and growing.

Combating Cult Mind Control

For many, this is the starting place to gaining a better understanding of how cults operate and it was definitely the entry point into my eyes being opened.

This book is a part of my recovery library and has been a very helpful resource. Having grown up in a cult and then marrying into a family cult within the cult I've had a very complex and layered experience of recovery. Another helpful book in my library is Take Back Your Life: Recovering from Cults and Abusive Relationships by Janja Lalich and Madeline Tobias.

This group is for families and loved ones impacted by high-control groups and coercive relationships. Connect with others, ask questions, and find clear, actionable education that supports recovery and healthy boundaries. We prioritize compassion, privacy, and accessibility in how we communicate. Together, we build understanding and a path forward.

I was unaware of you or the cult until I saw the documentary. Then as a patreon member of A little bit Culty I heard your interviews. You mentioned some kind of creative group. I am curious about that. I am working on creating humorous boundaries to actually say to others and not create any back and forth or more uncomfortable interactions for me. It seems to be never ending when you’re naturally easy going kind person , people seem to want to dominate my space.
